5 Reasons To Checkout Mick Jenkin’s New Album “Elephant In The Room”

Intro:

Mick Jenkins has arguably dropped one of the best albums this year. It’s getting closer to 10 years since he first broke into the industry, and he’s only grown in talent since then. With that said, he still moves & exists in a space that’s very non-industry influenced. However, this more authentic approach to his career comes with the fact that many Hip-Hop fans find themselves sleeping on his music. So, here are my Top 5 reasons you should listen to Mick Jenkin’s new album.

5. Magnificent Production Quality

If you like chill jazzy production, then this album is right down your alley. There’s tons of smooth jazzy instruments, sounds & samples. You’ll hear me reference a lot of things from this album as smooth, as it really fits the overall aesthetic the beats paint. He’s also always been great at picking certain sample beats that have subtle trap elements; whether it be an 808 pattern or fast hi-hats. Mick truly has a slept on ear for quality instrumentals.

4. Versatile Flow/Delivery

Mick’s delivery is smooth, yet powerful (Yes, I just used the word again). There are some moments where he reminds me of Jay Z, and others where his singing is some of the best we’ve ever heard from him. He really pulls off a lot of creativity in the short tracklist. It’s rare to hear a rapper pull off so many effortless flows. Mick has showcases his versatility very well across the album.

3. Amazing Song Themes/Ideas

Another creative element of Mick’s music are his amazing song ideas/themes/concepts. It’s easy to label him a “conscious rapper”, but he deserves much more credit than that label alone. He’s a multidimensional character that’s easy to understand & like, but also cleverly gives us an idea of his personality/life/interests. However, he does address serious & deep subjects like on the song “Things You Could Die For If Doing While Black”. This song casually highlights regular daily activities that can put you at risk if you’re a black man.

2. Features Compliment Mick Well

This is an album that’s not overly stacked with features like many other mainstream releases. The few features that are here really do a good job at complimenting Mick Jenkins on these tracks. The artist Greenslime gives an impresively immersive & imaginative verse that’s even very introspective, yet gangster. serpentwithfeet is the perfect example of a feature that does its job to compliment the main artist.

1. Top Tier Lyricism

Personally, Mick’s one of the best lyricists in the genre right now. He’s incredibly impressive with both his metaphors & imagery. Just like his delivery, there are even certain ways he structures his writing that reminds me of Jay Z. There’s also a lot of basketball references in his lines. The music video below is a good highlight & great example of #1 on this list.

Overall:

Elephant In The Room is another fine edition to Mick’s discography. If you weren’t familiar with him yet, I hope these reasons convince you to give him a chance. What are your thoughts on this album?
