Old Soul - Cameron Dietz

Intro:

Today’s post features the South Florida artist Cameron Dietz. He’s gained tons of attention from both celebrities & major publications, as he was named among the "Top 10 New Artists to Discover" by Highsnobiety. After a 2-year hiatus, he’s returned with a new single featuring legendary Compton rapper The Game. In his words, “The break was much needed, but I'm back and better than ever”. Let’s see how this new single reflects this shift in Cameron’s mindset.

Summary:

Cameron touches on his dark past, while contrasting it with the better place he’s in now. He’s not afraid of the things/people that scorned him years ago & try to drain his soul’s spirit. God has blessed him with the position he’s in today & he knows his worth. I love the creative wordplay utilized with the word “soul” (as well as other moments). The chorus is also very catchy & perfectly summarizes the songs themes. The Game gives a very impressive performance too, as he talks about his own past growing up in Compton & fits the song’s theme well.

Going back to Cameron, his flow is melodic with small glimpses of rapping in the verses. The effects used on the vocals & layers during the chorus sound very pleasing. You can tell he doesn’t need to rely on autotune, and he even reminds me of The Weeknd at times. The lyrics are delivered very confidently & elegantly. There’s a lot going on with the beat here too. This track is an anthem with tons of elements from Hip-Hop’s 808s & active drums, as well as aspects from genres like: Gospel, Pop & RnB. I love the strings & horns in the background that sit nicely with the beat’s atmospheric pad. The choir vocals are solid & reinforce the godly feel/theme.

Overall:

This is a great single to return back onto the music scene with. The quality of the song is industry standard, and features a legendary veteran MC. It’s a song that blends many different sounds & styles. If you’re someone with a diverse pallet, you’ll definitely be satisfied with this record. Thank you for reading, and enjoy Cameron Dietz’s new single below.
