This comes after her realization that she’s able to showcase her growth & artistry better through EPs instead of single releases. The result leaves the first installment of this EP series feeling very intentional & complete. Before reading our brief conversation, make sure you listen to Shanay Morant today below.
Me: What was the creative process while making your new EP “The Elements Of NaySoul Vol. 1”?
Shanay: Well, this project is very special to me because I had a large role in the production of this EP. Every song started out as a demo I created and just turned into something beautiful. I had a lot of help from my Engineer Lucho. He's amazing.
That’s awesome! Did you draw inspiration from any specific genres or artists?
The inspiration didn't come from an artist or genre. However, I've always had a creative spirit so the ideas were always coming. I took the challenge to start producing 2 years ago and I'm very glad that I did because the results are outstanding. I knew that I would find my sound if I stayed consistent and persistent.
On that topic, how would you describe your overall current style of music? Has it evolved over time?
My style of music is always evolving. The genre that my music will always fall under is Neo-Soul. It happens to be my favorite genre of music to this day. Blending genres is something I always look forward to and will always continue to do moving forward. I don't like to be put in a box.
What themes or messages do you hope listeners take away from this specific project?
The overall theme of the EP stems from the 4 elements of nature (Water, Fire, Earth, and Air). Based on this, I wanted to create 4 elements of human emotions with music. This EP happens to be water so the music reflects an emotional time in my life. When I listen to music, I think of colors and the music promotes different shades of blue. I'm excited that I get to do this again 3 more times for the other elements of nature.
That must’ve been hard to put together. What was the most challenging part of the recording process?
It took me 2 years and 8 months to release this EP. The first 2 years were the most challenging because I feared that I wouldn't be able to bring my ideas to fruition and it stopped me from starting. Once I got over that fear and decided that I was going to try no matter the outcome, it took me 8 months to create the music. It was the best decision I've ever made.
And, where does your stage name originate from? Has it ever changed in the past?
It's just my name. I thought about having a stage name but nothing ever stuck.
Do you have any upcoming releases or plans that you're comfortable sharing with the readers?
I'm working on some singles for the summer so definitely stay tuned.
That’s exciting! And finally, in your own words, why should a new listener check out this song today?
If you want to hear real soulful r&b and beautiful vocals, I'm your girl. Also, if my story can help you in any way accomplish some of the goals and dreams that you have, I know that my music will only enhance the feeling to go after what you want.
