Meet: SEIBEATS

Me: What first got you into music & the industry?

SEIBEATS: As a child, I immersed myself in the music of many 90s hip-hop artists, which inspired me to practice rapping. Recognizing the need for beats to rap over, I began learning about MIDI music and started creating my own beats.

Have you ever changed your stage name? Where does it originate from?

It’s a combination of my real name, SEI, and "BEATS." Initially, I worked under my real name.

Awesome! How would you describe your style of music production?

At first, I primarily created boombap hip-hop beats. However, as I explored the sounds of soul and psychedelic funk artists like George Clinton, I realized that relying solely on sampling limited my ability to fully express the music I envisioned. This prompted me to study chords and harmony, which deepened my understanding of musical composition. As a result, expressing the music I wanted became much easier.

There are a ton of dope features on your new album. Who are some of your favorite artists & producers to work with?

I'm always open to collaboration. Any artist, regardless of style or genre, who appreciates my music and is interested in working together is welcome.

Are there any other musicians you would like to work with that you haven’t collaborated with?

I’d be thrilled to work with any musician I’ve ever heard of, but I’m also eager to collaborate with anyone from the industry.

What does a perfect beat cook-up or studio session look like to you?

I now do all my work with VSTi and plugins, and I’m satisfied with the home studio I’ve set up. It includes a recording booth, and so far, I’ve never felt limited in what I can express here.

What are some other talents & interests you have outside of music itself?

Although I wouldn’t claim to have a specific talent, I do hold a master’s degree in science and engineering and work in that field. Besides music, I enjoy creating aquascapes and raising tropical fish as hobbies.

Do you remember the first beats you've ever made? If so, how do they compare to what you’re doing now?

I no longer remember the beats I made for rapping when I was younger. As my production skills improved, I ended up deleting everything because I felt embarrassed by my earlier work.

What's your favorite song that you've made so far in your career?

I have affection for all of my songs, but "Still Don’t Know" is my favorite in terms of style.

What's been the most difficult part of your journey in music?

As a music producer who immigrated from Korea, I began with no connections and constantly sought out artists to perform my songs, hoping that my tracks would eventually make it onto someone else’s album. For years, dozens of my songs remained untouched in my studio. There were also times when practical matters prevented me from maintaining my music work for extended periods.

Is there any advice you would give to someone else who is thinking about getting involved with the music?

Many talented independent artists, including myself, have faced challenges that sometimes force them to pause their music careers. It’s crucial to balance your music work with external issues to sustain your musical journey. Finding that balance and staying consistent is key.

And last, do you have any future plans for your career that you can share wit us?

I am producing solo albums for Eddie Brown and YK Viral, both of whom contributed to my album. Their releases are scheduled for later this year, so stay tuned!
