Meet: Boey
Me: How did you get started making music?
Boey: My first foray into music was playing the violin in my high school string orchestra. After transcribing a few pieces for the orchestra, I realized I could write songs for myself as well — and I really enjoyed it! I started releasing songs after I felt comfortable and confident in my craft.
And how did you come up with your stage name? Or is it tied to your real name at all?
“Boey” is actually my last name. It’s catchier and easier to pronounce than my first name!
Nice! That makes sense. How would you describe your style of music overall?
My style reflects my music roots; most of my songs are piano and string-driven ballads. Recently, I’ve been exploring the R&B genre a bit more, and this is evident in my sophomore album “Acoustic Space”.
Who are some of your favorite artists, engineers & producers to work with?
I predominantly work with two producers — Michael Tjanaka from Indonesia and Dumi from Romania. I send them my vocal demos and they always deliver excellent productions for the songs.
Are there any other musicians you would like to work with in the near future?
I’m a huge fan of Asiah. He’s one of my musical influences when it comes to R&B and I would love to work with him someday.
What does a perfect studio or recording session look like in your imagination?
Getting all vocals tracked in one take! Although that never happens with me as I tend to do multiple takes for each part of the song. But it’s never a chore to me as it’s all part of the process.
Outside of working on music, what are some other talents & interests you have?
I play Pokemon games almost every day. The turn-based battles are almost like a game of chess, but instead of moving chess pieces around the board, you’ve got adorable creatures to befriend and play with!
Do you remember the first song you've ever made?
The first song I wrote was Cruel Years. It’s an emotional song about wishing that someone dear to you had never experienced the tumultuous years that caused them to change forever. I’m proud of the song, and I think that it bears similarities to the ballads that I write today.
That one is pretty good & the writing is very heartful. Now, what's your favorite song that you've made so far?
My favourite song that I’ve written is “A Hallmark Movie”. It has a chill vibe and the lyrics encompass everything that you tend to associate with love stories in the movies. It earned my first radio play in Malaysia as well! And one of my good friends actually had it as his ringtone for awhile.
What's been the most difficult part of your journey in music?
Getting my music heard is probably the most difficult thing that I’m still struggling with. With so many new songs being released every day, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd and provide a reason for listeners to choose your song over someone else’s.
Is there any advice you would give to someone else who is thinking about getting involved with the music industry?
Follow your passion and most importantly, have fun creating songs that will be part of your legacy!
Finally, do you have any future plans for your career that you’re open to sharing?
I’m releasing my sophomore album “Acoustic Space” on September 20th 2024. It marks a shift in my sound as I explore more R&B tones and guitar-driven tracks, whilst not straying too far from the emotional ballads that my listeners are familiar with.
