nice - Amindi

Intro:

Amindi is a fairly new artist in today’s music landscape. I first discovered Amindi through her music being praised by TDE rapper Isaiah Rashad on the internet. Since then, she’s actually given Rashad a standout feature on his last album. It’s very clear that Amindi is one of the next big artists, and has potential to dominate in her lane of R&B. Let’s see if this new EP will be the release that takes her to these new heights.

Strengths:

Amindi touches on her come up story & is very aware of herself in this position (Ex: Slideshow). Her lyrics are written beautifully & she’s very clever with the way she utilizes wordplay. I love the song “NWTS”; which is themed & abbreviated after Drake’s album. There’s some bragging on the EP occasionally, but still gets very personal & relatable like on the song “Haircut”. She’s incredible at generating catchy choruses.

Her style has always felt very Badu inspired to me, especially with her delivery. It’s very smooth, laidback & intoxicating compared to her peers. The same can be said about her flows; which catchy & versatile. Her song “Telly” has been stuck in my head for the past few days actually. I give her respect for not going the feature route, as the project holds up fine on its own. I do wish there was a way to get Kendrick on the song “Haircut”.

More Strengths:

The sound of this project is versatile across the board, but still consistently remains in the alternative R&B lane. Between all the soft & beautiful chords, are vintage samples/sounds. Many different styles are explored & executed well by Amindi. The intro song “U Got Next” reminds me of some of Kanye’s work, and a few other songs give me major TDE vibes.

The drums used are usually either: lofi/dusty on the more traditional songs or more modern/trap-infused on the more contemporary records. There are some moments where she reminds me of SZA, however it’s never in a way that’s distracting or detracting. If anything, I just really wish this project was longer.

Overall:

This new EP is one of my favorite releases this year. Amindi put together a project that is hard to not replay more than once. It truly came around at the perfect time of year, as it fits the summer weather & easily transitions into the fall season’s feel.I would not be surprised if this (or a future release of hers) ends up in our end of the year list. Thank you all for reading and be sure to listen to the project yourself with the link below.
