DMV In The Building - Bridge Iceberg
Intro:
Today’s artist submission is from DMV artist Bridge Iceberg. For those that aren’t aware, DMV references to the area of the United States occupied by D.C., Maryland and Virginia. This area has always had a place in Hip-Hop and his single “DMV in the Building” is a celebration of the location. I was very interested before listening because the title gave me the impression it’d be heavily influenced from the area in some way. You can follow Bridge Iceberg on Instagram @bridgeiceberg.
Summary:
Right from the start you hear the DMV influence from the insane “go-go” style instrumental. Go-go is a unique regional sound which has been around as early as the 60’s/70’s. It blends many other genres like funk, dancehall, soul, R&B, and now Hip-Hop in most recent years. Flawless Tracks, the songs producer, does an amazing job making a bouncy drum pattern over the well placed samples. While the beat is structured with a clear sequence, Bridge himself approaches it as a bar fest that doesn’t need a traditional chorus; similar to a freestyle.
Bridge Iceberg finds a great pocket where his flow fits the beat perfectly. At some points it even gave me Wayne vibes. Additionally, his very confident and charismatic delivery adds to the song’s themes. Lyrically, Bridge is using punchlines filled with braggadocio and proving he’s better than his peers/competition. For example, at the 1:12 mark he raps:
“Yall spitting the same thing, Yall rap on the same beats/
Then acting like that wack shit is crack, man that aint me”
Overall:
I think Bridge Iceberg does a great job representing the DMV area. I can appreciate him choosing production that sounds native to his area and isn’t going after what’s trendy. The song isn’t super long or too short either, which for me gave it added replay value. I’d recommend this to any Hip-Hop fan, especially if you’re from or into the DMV area rap scene. Thank you for reading! and the song is linked below for those that need a listen.
