5 Reasons Why You Should Checkout Michael Christmas

Intro:

Michael Christmas, in my opinion, is an extremely under appreciated artist. The Boston rapper does have a very solid fanbase that has been cultivated throughout the years. Still though, I believe his music can reach even more people that may not be aware of his music. He already has the complete package of things you’d look for in a great Hip-Hop artists. Here are my top 5 reasons for why I’m recommending Michael Christmas.

1. Dude is a comedian

One thing I really appreciate about his music is how comical he is. While still having many serious songs, Michael really injects his style of humor into his music pretty well. Ultimately, how funny it is really depends on the individual person. Lines like

“Sleigh bells ringing, naw that's my nuts tho/
Wake up like dead Mike, word to MC Gusto”

may not appeal to your sense of humor in writing, but Michael’s delivery is what truly injects more humor into these type of jokes.

2. Has tons of projects

Don’t you hate when you discover a new artist you love, but they only have one or two projects at most? Or when you discover something new, but the rest of their older music is trash. The difference with Michael Christmas is that he’s been putting out high quality projects since 2014. Since then, he’s released 5 solo projects on all platforms; totaling to over 64 songs and doesn’t include collab projects or features. And I will personally say that he’s been one of the most consistent rappers I listen to.

3. Very versatile style

While still making hip-hop music at the end of the day, Michael Christmas has already proved that you can’t really box him in sonically. Over the years, he’s rapped over many different types of instrumentals. Whether it be more chill traditional rap (Ex. Where You Been), feel-good trap beats (Ex. These Days), or even groovy slow jams (Ex. Are You Around). There’s definitely a consistent style he presents as a rapper, but the sonic versatility always keeps his music fresh and more enjoyable. Who wants to listen to a bunch of songs that sound the same?

4. Loves to use pop culture references

I think it’s safe to say that Michael is truly “nerdy at heart”. For someone like me who also is, I love when he makes references to anime and videogames. Even outside of that though, you’ll find many different references to things like movies, tv shows, sports, locations, etc. He’s very open about his love of his interests, despite what anyone else thinks. For example, on the song Get Up he raps,

Adventure Time was never G enough.

And they was lookin' at me like a bitch

on a song that proudly shares the message of being yourself despite what others say.

5. Very relatable

This to me is one of the main and most important elements of his music. A large reason why I’ve gravitated to his lyrics were because he isn’t trying to be something he’s not, put others down or say he’s better than anybody. So it might not be a direct relation to his personality, but everyone can relate to being human. I think things mentioned above like the humor and references make him relatable to some, but his way of talking about normal everyday life experiences in an honest way is something you don’t get from many artists.

His biggest song to date, Not The Only One, is a song where he acknowledges that he isn’t perfect and messes up in life. BUT, spreads the message that everyone is going through the same things in their own unique way. So there’s no reason to beat yourself up about human experiences.

Overall:

If any of these 5 reasons sound interesting to you, I highly recommend you give his music a chance. I don’t think it’d be fair to recommend a specific album of his to check out. SO, I instead compiled a playlist of my favorite song from each project to give you a “sample size” of his music. It’s important, to me, to support independent musicians that make honest music with good intentions. Genuinely, I do think Michael Christmas has the potential and appeal in today’s lifeless world to reach a wider audience.
