Black Artists On Bandcamp You Should Support This Friday (May 2021)

Intro:

We’re back again to highlight some more talent on Bandcamp (a music platform for musicians of all kinds to share/sell their work). They’ve announced (yet again) they are waiving their revenue shares from all music sale profits on Friday (May 7th). This means 100% of all money will directly go to artists on the platform. This is another opportunity to support talented black musicians that put time & effort into their art. Here are some great artist I’ve found myself for you all to give support to this Friday.

Deeriginal is an artist hailing from London, UK. I was immediately hooked on his music after hearing the 1st song on his project Fresh Air. This 3-track tape is a representation of him removing toxic attachments, and replacing them with “fresh air”.

While choosing to focus on the brighter side of life, he effortlessly flows over these high quality UK beats & his powerful voice demands attention to his words. There’s also even a track at the very end that utilizes a Lo-fi Hip-Hop style to create a smooth outro. Overall, I’d say this short project has a little bit of everything for all kinds of Hip-Hop listeners.

Price (If You Choose To Buy): £5

Amaarae is a bit more established than other artists featured on this list. Nevertheless, her genre bending afro-pop is worth acknowledgement, praise & direct support. The project I discovered on Bandcamp is a deluxe version of her 2020 release “The Angel You Don’t Know”. The title is very fitting, as her vocals rest beautifully over these fun, bouncy & colorful instrumentals. I could see her sounding excellent alongside similar artists like Jean Deaux, Ravyn Lenae, Doja Cat, etc.

Price (If You Choose To Buy): $15

He’s located in Queens, New York & represents the city’s original sound very well. Cosmo is a lyricist that truly brings the grime & swagger that many fans love about 90’s rap. On this latest project, Criminal God Mixtape 2X, he respectfully puts his spin on classic hip-hop beats. While his rhymes are very impressive, the energy conjures with his voice & delivery is hard to ignore. If you’re into nostalgic acts like Griselda or early Pro Era, you’ll fall in love & definitely want to purchase this treat from Cosmo.

Price (If You Choose To Buy): $7

Last, we have an MF DOOM tribute project from the artist 007Bonez. The new project “One Beer Left carries some traditional Hip-Hop elements from the Los Angeles native. Upon first listen, it might even be hard to tell he is from California due to it not having a signature West Coast sound. The sample chops here are beautiful & Bonez sounds very comfortable as he rhymes thoroughly on each verse. It’s a great project to listen to in many different settings/contexts, and the wordplay is very solid. One of my favorite aspects is how varied & relatable the subject matter is.

Price (If You Choose To Buy): $7.99

Overall:

We hope you love and purchase the projects from these artists I found on Bandcamp this Friday. All the money goes back to these talented black musicians, if you buy these records tomorrow. Like last time, I tried finding a variety of different kinds of artists. It’s very important to continue supporting black art & culture. Thank you all for reading and enjoy the list of new music above.
