Meet: Mi’Kael Chalyce

Me: What originally got you into making music when you first started your journey?

Mi’Kael: I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. The church choir as a kid, a Pop Ensemble band in high school followed by several years of corporate gigging. When I moved to Atlanta in 2019 it was with the sole purpose of launching a career in the music industry. I’ve always known this was my calling but haven’t always taken the best steps for my longevity in the business. I cut ties with my record label recently and now just feels like the perfect time to embark on this journey.

And, how did you choose your stage name? Has it ever changed at any point in your career?

My real name is Mi’Kael Chalyce Reed so my stage name is my first and middle name. Some people call me Kael and I’ve considered changing my stage name but have spent a lot of time branding so I allow people to call me my nick name—Kael.

That makes sense. Especially since you have established a solid brand too! How would you describe your current style of music for new listeners reading now?

Since my debut, my sound has truly evolved. My early releases, like Passion and Chemistry and my EP Set Free, introduced me as an artist rooted in self-expression and healing. Over the years, I’ve deepened my musical narrative, bringing in more complex emotional themes and experimenting with new sounds, as you can hear in singles like Holiday Bae and Elevation.

My upcoming single, Faded Love, is a powerful testament to this growth—a reflection of hard-earned lessons and newfound resilience. My sound now goes beyond soulful melodies; it’s a journey of reinvention, maturity, and self-empowerment, making my music as transformative as it is resonant.

Who are some of your favorite artists or producers to collaborate with while working in the studio?

I worked with Dorrell Smith and Beats by Dre at Grindin ENT Studios for my upcoming single, Faded Love. Our ideas fit together like a glove and just flowed throughout the entire project. They are two of my favorite producers to work with. Our projects always feel like home.

I’m sure over time the chemistry keeps getting stronger too with your producers! Now, what was the first song you ever made? What was it like?

The first song I wrote was called Pizza Guy and it was about falling in love over a delivery. It was to the tune of “Me, Myself, and I” and it was hilarious! Well, it’s pretty funny now but at age 11 it felt like the most beautiful love song. The lyrics were cliche and I didn’t have an original melody but my relatives assured me it was a great song, albeit a little mature for me.

That honestly is a very creative song concept though, especially at that early of an age! Outside of music, what are some other hobbies or talents you have?

I’m an educator. I’ve been teaching 8th grade ELA for the last 11 years and my students are my life! I also coach a majorette dance team and sponsor Musical Theater and Beta Club. I am also a mom of three— ages 14, 9, and 2! I was married for 8 years and decided to move from Nashville to Atlanta after my divorce.

That’s wonderful! On the topic of music again, how would you describe the perfect studio setting & experience for the readers?

The perfect studio session is a collaboration with multiple creatives all working towards the same goal—an amazing song. There are 2-3 writers, a vocal producer, and an engineer experimenting with all the sounds that bring the song to life.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far during your journey?

It’s been difficult to identify my musical tribe. I’m an easygoing person and can usually work with anyone but over time I am learning that not everyone is meant to be a part of your journey. It’s difficult to find people willing to invest in your dream at the same level you are willing to. I also struggle with solo songwriting and it’s tough finding quality songwriters who will put in the work to create something magical.

Is there any advice you would give to someone else considering getting into music?

Never give your power away! Study the business and protect yourself. There are so many entities preying on artists who are “too hungry”. Build a catalog of songs and producers who want to see the song go far.

And finally, what’s next for you that readers should expect? I’m sure everyone is excited about the new “Faded Love” single!

I am releasing a full album in the Fall of 2025. I will be headlining at the Central Oregon Juneteenth Festival next year and every Friday night at The Jam ATL at Anthony’s pizza and pasta.
