Meet: Leo Golo
Me: The moment you realized you wanted to start making music, what was it that inspired you to get started?
Leo: I started playing piano when I was 3 years old so it's something that I've always been super passionate about. I started writing my own songs as a teenager and began sharing them with the world later on. My father liked playing the guitar, but nobody in my family was really a professional musician. Thanks to the support of my parents I could study music and try to build a career out of it.
Wow! It does sound like music has always been natural for you. Do you remember the first song you ever made?
I remember the first song I ever wrote which, obviously, is not out and never will be. It was called "Get Up" and it was a ballad about a fake story of someone who passed away. It's awful but I still remember it haha.
Understandable haha! How would you describe your current sound these days in comparison?
Now I would say I make pop or indie pop music but it has evolved a lot. My first EP had more of an acoustic R&B vibe to it. Now I'm finding my sound and I feel very comfortable with the music I'm making.
Where does your stage name originate from? And has it ever changed?
Golo comes from the first two letters of my surnames (Gomez Lopez). This has always been my nickname so it felt natural to adopt it to my artist name. But I needed a first name and the real one didn't sound good so I tried different options until I found Leo which was the second option that my parents wanted to give me. It sounded good and pretty international so I instantly loved it.
I like that! It’s a very creative & unique name. Now, who are some of your favorite artists or producers you’ve worked with?
I loved working with Kquimi Saigi as a producer for this album and also with Arnau Figueres as the mixing and mastering engineer. Also my latest single "Too Close" is a collab with ANGE and it also felt super good and easy to do it with her.
“Too Close” was such a fantastic collaboration between the two of you! When you’re working on music, what does the perfect studio session look like?
Surrounded by songwriter and producer friends and just having a great time overall. Creating a great song with more people gives you a happiness rush that lasts for a few days so I would really love to do that more often.
Additionally, what are some other talents & hobbies outside of music that some may not know about you?
OI'm pretty good at console gaming haha. I have a PS4 and I like playing all types of games when I have time.
What has been the most difficult part of your career so far?
I think balancing expectations. I really love being in the studio and the stage but everything that comes with releasing a song and promoting is kinda hard mentally. It's a bit tough seeing how a lot of people and even people you know don't support your music journey when you put everything you had into this. That's why I'm super grateful when people show support and love to my music. I really appreciate it!
I completely agree, as it does help to just focus on your fans & community. Is there any advice you would give to someone interested in getting started with music?
Well, you better enjoy it a lot cause it's not easy at all. Know your strengths and weaknesses cause that's what will make you a great musician. Also, be nice with everybody, they could be the person to change your life.
And last, are there any final words or things that you have for fans & our readers?
I just released my song "Too Close" but I have one more single before the album. I'm super excited for people to listen to the full album. After that, I have more music that I'm still in the process of writing but that I can't wait to share cause it really feels like me. It really feels like I've found my sound and vibe.
