Me: How long have you been making music & what inspired you to get started?
Flamaz: The vibrant culture and rhythms of my surroundings in Kenya first sparked my interest in music. From a young age, I was captivated by the sounds of local music, whether traditional songs or contemporary hits. I often listened to the stories conveyed through lyrics and the emotions expressed in melodies. This passion ignited my desire to create my own music, leading me to write songs and experiment with different sounds.
As I became more involved in the music scene, I realized the incredible potential to connect with people through my art. My initial experiences performing at local events were exhilarating and solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in music. I aimed not only to share my stories but also to inspire others through my journey. The music industry is a challenging yet rewarding space, and every step I take fuels my passion to create and innovate.
How would you describe your style musically? Has your sound changed & evolved since you started?
I would describe my musical style as a fusion of traditional Kenyan sounds, Afrobeats, hip-hop, and contemporary pop. This blend reflects my diverse influences and aims to create music that resonates with listeners through catchy hooks and relatable lyrics. Since I started, my sound has evolved significantly. Initially, I focused on experimenting with different beats and melodies to find my voice.
Through collaborations and experiences in the industry, I've become more confident in my artistic identity, allowing me to explore deeper themes in my lyrics and refine my production techniques. I’m committed to continuous growth, and I believe my music will keep evolving while staying true to my roots.
Nice! Also, what is the story behind your stage name? It fits your music pretty well.
My stage name, Flamaz, has a unique origin that holds a special meaning for me. The word "Flamaz" is derived from the idea of a flame, symbolizing power and intensity in everything I do. It reflects my passion for music and my drive to shine brightly in the industry. Additionally, the term "goat" is associated with greatness, and I strive to be the best in all my endeavors. So, for me, being a "mountain goat" embodies resilience and strength, just as a goat can navigate difficult terrains.
I’ve never changed my name because Flamaz truly represents who I am as an artist and a person. It encapsulates my journey, my experiences, and my commitment to excellence in my craft.
Do you remember the first song you've ever made? If so, what was it like compared to your new stuff?
Yes, I remember the first song I ever made, which was titled "Hii Ndio Fom" featuring Juss. It was a significant moment for me, as it marked the beginning of my journey as an artist. The song had a catchy beat and a fun vibe, capturing the essence of joy and celebration—something I still strive for in my music today.
Comparing it to my latest release, "Nelia" featuring Yvionna, I've seen tremendous growth in my artistry and production quality. While "Hii Ndio Fom" was an exciting start, "Nelia" showcases a more refined sound and deeper lyrical content. My experiences over the years have allowed me to experiment more with different styles and collaborate with talented artists, resulting in a song that resonates on multiple levels. It’s amazing to see how far I’ve come, and I’m excited to continue evolving as an artist with each new project.

Some of my favorite artists to work with include Yviona, Zzero Sufuri, and Ty Stringz. Each brings unique energy and creativity to the studio, making the collaboration process exciting and inspiring. I also admire Tekno Miles, DJ Maphorisa, Khaligraph Jones, and Shenseea for their incredible talent and ability to push boundaries in music.
On the production side, I love collaborating with talented producers like Dr. Eddy, Eddy Man, Gustino, magix enga, Vicky Pon Dis, and Naiboi. They have a remarkable ability to craft sounds that perfectly complement my vision. I’ve also enjoyed working with Ricky Beko, Mohtif, and Di Don, who bring their unique flair. Each collaboration enriches my artistry and contributes to my growth as a musician.
If you were to describe the perfect studio session in your imagination, what would that look like?
In my imagination, a perfect studio or recording session is all about creating an inspiring and comfortable environment that fosters creativity. I envision a well-equipped studio filled with top-notch recording gear and instruments, where I can experiment with different sounds. The atmosphere would be vibrant yet relaxed, with good lighting and a cozy space for everyone involved. Having a supportive team, including talented producers and musicians, is crucial—people who can bring fresh ideas and collaborate seamlessly.
During the session, I’d love to have a clear flow of communication, where everyone feels free to share their thoughts and contribute creatively. A perfect session would also include moments of fun and laughter to keep the energy high, allowing us to capture that magic in the music. Ultimately, it’s about coming together to create something beautiful and authentic that resonates with listeners.
Nice! And what are some other talents & hobbies outside of music that some may not know about you?
Outside of music, I have a few talents and hobbies that might surprise some people. I’m also an IT enthusiast, which allows me to explore technology and its applications in the music industry. I have a keen interest in politics and enjoy staying informed about current events, as it helps me understand the world around me.
Cooking is another passion of mine; I love experimenting with different cuisines and flavors, making it a fun way to unwind. I also enjoy playing and producing music, which keeps me engaged with my creative side outside of my main projects. Additionally, I have a background in agriculture, which connects me to nature and provides a sense of fulfillment.
I prefer being indoors and often work from home, where I can focus and cultivate my ideas in a comfortable environment. These activities help me maintain balance in my life while fueling my creativity.
With all of that in mind, what's been the most difficult part of your journey in music?
The most difficult part of my journey in music has been navigating the challenges of breaking into a competitive industry. There were times when I faced rejection and self-doubt, especially when I was trying to find my sound and establish my identity as an artist. It can be disheartening to put your heart and soul into a project only to feel like it's not being recognized or appreciated. '
Additionally, balancing my passion for music with the realities of life, such as financial pressures and personal commitments, has been tough. However, these challenges have taught me resilience and perseverance. They’ve pushed me to work harder, stay focused on my goals, and remain dedicated to my craft. Ultimately, every obstacle has shaped me into the artist I am today, and I believe it will continue to fuel my growth moving forward.

Absolutely! If you're thinking about getting into music, my biggest piece of advice is to stay true to yourself and your unique voice. It's easy to get caught up in trends and what others are doing, but authenticity is key to standing out in the industry. Don’t be afraid to experiment and explore different styles to find what resonates with you.
Also, be prepared for challenges and setbacks; they are part of the journey. Stay committed, work hard, and be open to learning from every experience—whether it’s a success or a failure. Networking is also crucial; build relationships with other artists, producers, and industry professionals. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you.
Lastly, remember that passion and perseverance will take you far. Keep pushing your boundaries, and most importantly, enjoy the process of creating and sharing your music with the world!
