Vince Staples Is In His Prime Right Now

Intro:

Vince Staples is entering his peak as an artist in this new decade of Hip-Hop. The eclectic Long Beach, CA rapper recently dropped his new studio album RAMONA PARK BROKE MY HEART. Not only do I think it’s one of the best albums this year, but also easily lives up to his previous self-titled album. Both albums are very similar to each other despite having very clear differences as well. One commonality though is that both albums are Vince’s best work to date.

Understanding His Sound/Style

I say he’s entered his prime because it sounds like he now perfectly understands his voice & what he sounds best over. Both of his last 2 albums feature very laidback & chill sample-based instrumentals with numerous influences. His versatility as an artist is still in top shape as he can glide over more traditional Cali beats, serve melodies/catchy choruses, or deliver hard lyrics. He truly doesn’t get enough credit for that trait.

Kenny Beats deserves a mention here as the two combine for a match made in heaven. We’ve seen Vince Staples make some of the best music of his career when working alongside the well-respected producer. The light & relaxing soundscape he chooses to surround his dark lyrics/subject matter with makes for a beautiful contrast every single time. Yet, he’s also capable of adapting that same sound into some for the more casual/accessible playlist audience:

His Concepts & Songwriting

Additionally, Vince Staples improved his abilities as a rapper & showcases tons of impressive verses in his newer music. It’s not like Vince was never a lyricist at all or wasn’t capable of crafting entendres, but I feel as though many don’t give him enough credit for his pen game. I think this is more apparent on his self album, but it’s honestly pretty even overall. One of my favorite Vince bars is:

“But "Lil Wayne Carter" what I call my .38”

”Kiss your baby in the face if you play with where I stay”

~ LAW OF AVERAGES by Vince Staples

It’s incredible to see how introspective & observant Vince Staples is creatively with his songwriting. He’s able to paint the perfect picture of his thoughts/mindset & the things going on in the environment around him. Or he can get reflective & open up about his past/upbringing. He’s always been capable of these things, but now it’s being produced at such a higher quality than previous efforts. It all comes together for some amazing individual song concepts & a better album listening experience.

Overall:

Do you think Vince Staples is making the best music of his career right now? I think he’s one of the most interesting artists to watch during this decade so far. It could be a stretch, but maybe we’re seeing the beginning of something legendary. The California native is great to have as a representative of the West Coast forHip-Hop (even though he’s even more than that).
