Top 5 Songs From EARTHGANG’s New Album ‘GHETTO GODS’
Intro:
Earthgang has come through with easily their biggest budget project yet. The new album sounds like there was money behind it between production quality & specific styles. Like with their other albums, GHETTO GODS has tons of variety within its concise tracklist. There are likely to be some of your favorite songs snubbed from the list down below, and there might even be a song you think should be higher/lower. With that said, let’s take a look at the Top 5 songs from Dreamville’s Atlanta-born MCs.
5. WATERBOYZ (ft. J. Cole & JID)
WATERBOYZ is easily the most popular song on the album with features from label mates J. Cole & JID. It manages to sound modern, but still embodies an early 2000’s Southern aesthetic. The beat is groovy and laced with bouncy percussion alongside a smooth bass line. All 4 rappers give fun verses that touch on subjects like lust, ambition, grinding, etc. While it’s probably many people’s favorite song from GHETTO GODS, I find the other songs above a lot more engaging.
4. ALL EYES ON ME
All Eyes On Me was one of the first singles for the album & is great for a lot of reasons. For starters, it’s EARTHGANG’s best attempt at making a more commercially accessible record on the album & their entire discography as a whole. The group’s vocals float gracefully over a heavenly trap beat with an infectious sample. Johnny Venus is probably my favorite on the song, but Doc closed it out perfectly with his verse at the end.
“If your diamonds don't dance, what's the chain of command?” - Doctur Dot
3. POWER (ft. Ceelo Green & Nick Cannon)
This one was a complete surpriser for me on my first listen to this album. When I saw the features were Ceelo Green & Nick Cannon, the expectations were more of a joyful uplifting song. Instead, we have a powerfully spiritual standout song that features amazing vocal samples & drum patterns. Ceelo Green & Nick Cannon compliment everything perfectly with amazing appearances. Does Ceelo have the best verse?
“Put down your God and pick up your Bible (Yeah)”
”Put down your picket signs and pick up your rifle”
2. SMOKE SUM
Without context, one would probably assume that this track is just the stereotypical stoner anthem we expect from Hip-Hop. And on one hand, it’s a fantastic song with an immaculate “vibe” between the song’s instrumental & lyrics about their smoking habits. Additionally, it serves as a conversation about how many smoke marijuana usually to escape the dilemmas that face reality. It specifically is made to resonate mainly for black people in America dealing with everyday challenges & systematic injustices that exist in the country. It’s a recipe for a great song from the group that people can stand behind.
“But what about me? Where can I escape?”
“That's why I hit the back porch (Yeah), light up and float away (Yeah)” - Johnny Venus
1. AMERICAN HORROR STORY
The perfectly lead-up single for an album like GHETTO GODS. While I enjoyed the record when it was originally released, the album drop has breathed some new air into this song & made it even better. It encapsulates almost all of the overarching themes presented in the tracklist while still having a hard beat for casual listeners. The chorus is extremely catchy too, and both rappers flow effortlessly with top-tier delivery over smooth guitar samples. It has everything you’d want and more from an EARTHGANG record.
“Talk to me now, speak loud and clear”/“Where would I be if I was not here?”
Overall:
I think most of the songs listed above are pretty fitting & make sense. I enjoy GHETTO GODS as an overall album, but certain songs stick out from the other weaker ones. It’ll be exciting to see how much bigger their careers will grow in the future. EARTHGANG is without a doubt talented enough to stay around for a long time.
