Top 10 JID Features (+Playlist)

Intro:

JID is easily one of the most talented lyricists in today's rap scene. Since breaking out in 2017 on J. Cole’s record label, Dreamville, his career just keeps going up. He’s even consistent on both his own music and his guest appearances. He’s been rapping for years so there are a lot of guest appearances I had to sort through to compile this subjective list. Here are his Top 10 features in my opinion.

*Disclaimer this will not include Dreamville tracks*

10. Soho - Boogie

Starting off with his feature on Boogie’s last album, this verse is definitely one of the shorter ones on this list. The song itself is pretty short though and JID crams a lot of words into it. He easily transitions from harmonizing at the start of his verse to complete speed rapping. I’d argue he’s one of the best with speed control as you can make out every word he’s saying & it all makes sense. Plus, his flow is very calculated over this amazing beat.

9. Sunday - Earthgang

This is the oldest feature I have listed on here (and not the only Earthgang collaboration). A lot of his old features are actually pretty good, but this time was my favorite. It’s not his craziest verse ever but I really enjoy how smooth his delivery is over this really chill beat. His faster/more aggressive delivery wouldn’t work on a beat this laidback. Essentially, I have this at #9 because I think he compliments everything else about the track very well

8. Porno - IDK

Another very short verse and I could see how this placement could be controversial. In total, it runs exactly 28 seconds long. It also is at the very end of the song. BUT regardless of those reason, I think JID still gives a great performance with the small amount of time given to him. The “cock pit” line is questionable, but the overall content of his verse matches both IDK’s & Pusha’s.

7. Broke - Ari Lennox

Now let me say, the song is already amazing off the strength of Ari, the production, etc. JID then comes in and puts the icing on the cake. Really showcases how JID can be very versatile. He switches flows effortlessly as he’s speaking to an unknown woman. Similar to my #9 pick, he really compliments everything about the song; while still giving an incredible verse.

6. Momma Told Me -

Earthgang

Earthgang and JID teaming up on a track is a recipe for a great song. Momma Told Me is no different as all 3 rappers are getting grimy and aggressive on their verses. JID gives a lot of street imagery and insight to what it was like for him growing up in Atlanta. He turns the energy up as his verse goes on and matches the menacing aesthetic set by the instrumental.

5. Fried Rice - Bas

Both parts of this verse to me are great. I really enjoy Bas’ verse a lot though (which deserves more credit) but JID still steals the show for me. The instrumental is already pretty different and he still manages to find multiple pockets to flow along with. Another speed verse of his too where he’s not just saying a bunch of bulls*** like many that do this style. The “other part” is when the instrumental changes up and he starts singing. I’ve always said he has a nice voice and is capable of creating nice melodies.

4. Ego Check - Wynne

Both Wynne and JID come together for a banger. JID specifically sounds hungry and really went hard on his verse. His lyrics range from boasting about himself to street talk. There’s even a very controversial Tomi Lahren diss that escaped blogs and publications, “Tell me what the fuck you niggas talm'bout/ I'm tired, might put a Tommy gun in Tomi Lahren mouth.” For context, He does follow up the line by admitting how wild the lyric is. Overall, it’s exactly what you’d expect from a fire JID feature.

3. SIRENS | Z1RENZ - Denzel Curry

This one would probably be many people’s #1 pick. And I definitely see why, both rappers give amazing performances. However I couldn’t put this JID feature any higher because of how quiet his mix is. He’s not inaudible, but at least when I use my earbuds, it’s noticeably quieter than Denzel’s. Regardless, his verse is filled with great rhyming and nice flows. I especially enjoy the end where he scales his voice up & down in range, while simultaneously keeping up with his quick delivery.

2. Redblue - Rapsody

I love the clever way JID is incorporating the colors of red and blue into his verse. Rapsody even does the same with her verse incorporating both colors. Both describing gang culture through storytelling, metaphors, etc. JID is also flowing like crazy over this beautiful brass sample provided by 9th Wonder. I put this over a lot of the other features too because of how focused he was on the topic and the execution of it.

1. Meditate - Earthgang

It’s only right that the last spot would be an Earthgang collab. I said Sirens would be a lot of people’s #1 choice, and this one is probably everyone else’s. He’s not speaking on anything I haven’t covered in other verses (gun talk, bragging, etc.). What standouts out here is his delivery, specifically how he starts the record. Rapid fire flows right from the beginning, with lyrics that are basically asking people to be real with themselves and others. It’s another moment where JID and even Earthgang are finding great pockets over a fire beat.

Overall:

JID has so many guest verses that it really was hard to even choose 10 to be fair. I’m sure many people’s list would be different from mine. He doesn’t have too many misses in terms of features, so you really can’t go wrong. Plus, this is all subjective but I appreciate anyone that finds this list to be solid.
