Semifinals - Duckie Mr Poetry

Intro:

Today’s post features the artist Duckie Mr Poetry from the Bahamas. He’s been building local buzz & momentum in his area for the past few years. Interestingly, Duckie’s father named him after a famous Jazz musician Najee, and he received his nickname “Duckie” from a classmate in grade school. For someone that’s from outside of the states, his music style is very accessible to a wide number of audiences. Let’s break down his latest single with Rich Smoke “Semifinals.

Summary:

In the song, Duckie’s songwriting is focused & catchy (especially the chorus). He also makes great use of his ad-libs that bring a lot of personality to his lyrics. He touches on themes of celebrating life/his accomplishments. Additionally, Duckie is leveling up beyond trials, tribulations & doubters. His melodic auto-tuned delivery is smooth & mixed clean. There are moments where his voice reminds me of UnoTheActivist & Tobi Lou a little during his verse. Overall, Duckie Mr Poetry gives a solid performance on this release.

The beat on Semifinals balances being both chill & anthemic. I could hear this atmospheric drill beat in many different settings thanks to its smooth 808 glides & airy sample choice. I love the woodwind elements in combination with the rattling hi-hat & snare rolls. The way Duckie flows over the instrumental with ease & multiple flows is excellent. Additionally, the featured artist Rich Smoke brings tons of energy to the song with an assertive & heartfelt performance. Not only does his accent add character, but I also love how well he stayed on topic with the song’s overall themes.

Overall:

l highly recommend this song, especially with the weather warming up & NBA playoffs going on. Duckie is a talented artist with tons of potential to move higher in the industry. I also think the featured artist Rich Smoke showcased tons of potential as well. Hopefully, we get some more releases from these two very shortly. Thank you for reading, and enjoy Duckie Mr Poetry’s new single below.
