Intro:

Today’s post features the lovely singer-songwriter Soleil & the talented VKZ. The duo has come together for a new single titled “On The Low”. Many of you may already recognize Soleil from a previous submission, but this is my first time getting familiar with VKZ’s work. I’ve been excited to listen to & share my thoughts on the new record with you all today. Now, let us get right into our latest artist submission review.

Summary:

One of the standout elements of this song is the majestic guitar strings that carry the bulk of the instrumentation on “On The Low”. VKZ provides us with some classic R&B vibes that really leaves listeners hooked off the first few seconds. The glimmering synth keys that appear during the chorus compliment the melody very well.

The variety of percussion (Hi-Hat rolls/shakes & subtle bongo) adds layers of rhythm to the punchy kick/snare drum pattern. I can’t help but think that an artist like 6lack or Summer Walker would sound beautiful alongside Soleil on a potential remix.

Soleil truly shows why she’s a force to be reckoned with on this track, as she effortlessly floats over the beat & even gives a pretty speedy flow at the entrance of her second verse. Her vocals are very clear, dynamic & cut right through the mix without overpowering the rest of the layers/instruments. Specifically, the way she sings the “Low, Low, Low” refrain on the chorus is super catchy & has been stuck in my head.

The central theme of the song is about a person of interest Soleil has been spending time with recently. She thinks of him while he’s away, but has no intentions of becoming an official couple. Instead, the lyrics paint out that she would much rather keep things private between the two. There are no strings attached to this “relationship”, and the lyrics paint out all their encounters very vividly:

“Let me light up my incense. Come & show me you’re a man”

“I left the door unlocked for you, so you can let yourself in”

Overall:

The combination of VKZ’s beautiful guitar & Soleil’s gorgeous voice results in a song that is sexy & relatable. This easily could be played in a number of different settings & sounds ready for commercial airwaves. If you’re not familiar with either artist, I definitely believe “On The Low” to be a great introduction. Thank you for reading, and enjoy their new single below.
