Harlem Night - Henry Coffin
Intro:
Today’s post features New York’s very own Henry Coffin. After getting great reception on his first single "Pitch Black”, Coffin continued with building his career. The rapper’s been working for a few years now & developed a very good approach to the native sound. Additionally, Coffin cites Kay Flock & Cardi B as some of his influences. Let’s now start analyzing his aggressive song Harlem Night.
Summary:
Henry’s ability to flow remains the main highlight of the whole song. What sets him apart from other NY drill artists is that his rapping sounds effortless. His flows fit the pockets of the beat as you’d expect & delivers a barrage of flows. Thematically, Harlem Night follows much of the same subject matter as other drill songs. This doesn’t become an issue at all but goes to show how the song fits into its market/target audience. The are plenty of references to Henry being on “demon time”:
“I’m a demon it’s okay/Tell myself that every day”
As mentioned above, Henry's very aggressive rap delivery adds tons of character to his persona. At times it does even remind me of a Bronx drill rapper like Kay Flock. His delivery also fits the beat/style very well, but still creates an interesting contrast. Speaking of the beat, Harlem Night is another exciting NY drill style of production. The 808 bass is very bouncy & punchy, but it does follow a very familiar drum pattern. Despite this, the vocal sample used is beautiful & I love how the hi-hats dance all over the rest of the percussion.
Overall:
This track was a very pleasant surprise for me overall. I do enjoy how Coffin’s single doesn’t overstay it’s welcome & is solid all around. I could see tons of people loving this track & would be perfect for many TikTok ideas. It’ll curious to see how far Henry’s career will soar from here! Thank you for reading, and enjoy Henry Coffin’s new single below.
