End Of Daze - Spillage Village

Intro:

Spillage Village are a southern group consisting of the artists: JID, 6lack, Mereba, Jurdan Bryant, Earthgang and more. They’ve been active dropping music since the earlier half of the last decade. I’m a big fan of most of the group and was excited to see the announcement of a new collaborative project. My expectations for this single were pretty high but I still tried to remain un-bias on first listen.

Strengths:

Everyone gives amazing verses that are descriptive and fit the songs themes. Each Spillage member has a unique style individually, which makes none of the verses sound similar/repetitive. The different flows actually bring a lot of variation to the song. The beat itself is groovy but has a gloomy vibe which captures the “end of the world” aesthetic. The eerie guitars playing throughout the song add to the atmosphere, and the bass line is pretty strong.

Topically, each member of this song detail the world ending and what they’d be doing/around at the time. It’s a pretty creative idea that definitely reflections real life for many now. The chorus has lines about fires ablaze and god’s presence leaving the world. Alternatively, since the song title plays on the words “days” and “daze”, it could be a metaphor for the end of the illusions set upon many.

I liked everyone’s verses almost evenly, but I do want to highlight Mereba’s specifically. I wasn’t expecting her to give a rap verse (which was melodic), but that along with adding that with lyrics like: “It's been like apocalypse since I was on the teat/Reagan worked for Satan how he preyed upon the meek” make her verse a powerful standout.

Weaknesses:

There really aren’t any major weak points about this song. However, it’s a longer song with a slower pace. As mentioned above, each of the member’s unique styles add variation to the song. The drum pattern of the beat though is essentially the same for a majority of the time; which does get slightly old by the end. There are a lot of different rappers, so I do understand that the beat has to be stripped back enough for everyone to find a pocket.

This wasn’t something I felt during my first impressions though. After the first few listens is when I found myself getting distracted sometimes while listening. Nothing about that makes this song bad by any means, but I’m not sure how often I’ll return to the single (at least the full duration). But other than that personal gripe, it’s a very well executed song idea.

Overall:

Spillage Village have proven to be one of the most exciting groups watch in the current rap scene. This single is was dropped at a perfect time and was well needed right now. I have a feeling that this single will fit into their album very well. They seriously might drop one of the best projects we’ll hear this year.
