DR. EV4L - Young Nudy

Intro:

The South has been on fire this year, and Young Nudy is stepping into the ring with his post-pandemic (it’s almost over hopefully) album release. Nudy has solidified himself as a staple in East Atlanta. This new album of his seems to be streaming very well & gaining a lot of organic attention. With that being said, it still seems like there’s an audience of listeners that sleeps on/underrates him. Let’s see if Nudy has took his artistry to the next level.

Strengths:

His rapping ability has stepped up significantly compared to his previous releases. Despite not being a true lyricist, Nudy manages to create some catchy, clever & savage lines (that are easy to believe). The main highlight I noticed was how well he steps up & switches his flow a lot throughout the tracklist (Ex: Dr. EV4L & Soul Keeper). Outside of Nudy bragging about juggling both in the streets & the industry, you get the usual themes of money, murder, trapping, etc.

Young Nudy has a very unique voice & he brings a lot more energy along with it on this particular album. The few moments he uses autotune are even delivered the best I’ve heard from his discography. 21 Savage & G Herbo give some of the best verses on the entire album, alongside Nudy. Pierre Bourne is no where to be found, but the other producers do an AMAZING job on giving Nudy the production style for his sound/flow (Ex: Child’s Play). A lot of the melodies sound straight from a Nintendo game. There’s a wide variety of retro, trippy & atmospheric synths/pads/arps/etc (Ex. Mini Me & Columbian Necktie).

Weaknesses:

Despite his rapping being the best it’s ever been overall, there are still times when he spits very basic and/or questionable lines. His flow improving does make up for this for the most part. His voice can also be somewhat boring for some listeners/haters that don’t particularly care for his laidback southern delivery. Lil Uzi Vert has an alright performance on their collab, but it’s easily the most forgettable feature on the whole project.

Overall:

Young Nudy has delivered the most consistent project in his discography. He proves that he’s fully self-reliant; without needing Pierre’s creative backing or multiple 21 features. I’m hoping that this is the album the propels him further into the mainstream outlets & platforms. Regardless, I’ll be enjoying multiple tracks from Dr. EV4L during the next few weeks.
