Meet Tyrus J
Me: What initially inspired you to start making music early on?
Tyrus: The love for creating and my family believing in me. The loss of family members who wanted to see me succeed in my artistry. My Grandma Nean and Uncle Ken that always wanted me to sing when I was younger.
That’s very inspiring! From there, how would you describe your sound as it’s evolved over the years?
Everything from my lyrics to cadence has evolved tremendously making me into the star that I am today. I would say my sound has a Southern soul feel to it, but it also has the flow and beauty of some older tunes in the ‘90s & early 2000s
Do you remember the first song you've ever made? If so, how does it compare to your newer work?
The first song I ever recorded was recorded on my phone in my closet when I was 15. It was a clever to genuine differences.
Where does your stage name originate from? Have you ever changed your name?
In my earlier years, I went by IamTy because of where I was in life. I feel like my name has changed with whom I have become in life. As a new father to a little girl, I want to be seen as a man!
That’s so real & very honorable! I’m sure she & your family are very proud of where you are in your journey. Now, who are some of your favorite artists/producers/engineers to work with currently?
I love to work with people that challenge my creative abilities and bring the best out of me. Some good collabs for myself have been with 24Skateo!, King TD, Cortez McKinnon, Tyboo, and YFm Ray. I like being in the studio with aviator AJ because he always keeps it real when I’m recoding. And some of my favorite engineers to work with are nitro, 808tommy, and kyduh.
In a perfect world, what does a perfect studio or recording session look like in your imagination?
A perfect session in my eyes is no one there but myself and my engineer. Just a quiet room. That allows me to really go to that deep place that I need.
I’m sure many can directly relate to that as well, as sometimes it’s easier to lock in that way. Besides music, what are some talents & hobbies that others may not know about you?
I’m a great athlete. Played basketball and football all throughout school. Ranked top in the state, and also a beast In slow pitch softball ! And I can cook a mean marry me chicken meal and seafood boil.
What's been the most difficult part of your journey in music?
The most difficult part of my journey thus far has been knowing what to drop.
On that note, is there any advice you would give to someone who is thinking about getting into music today?
Do it! Don’t let doubt or negativity come between you and your dreams! That’s for anything though, not just music.
And finally, do you have any upcoming plans or releases you’d like to share with the fans?
I just released my debut album/EP “Really That” on all platforms. I just recently performed at the Uptown Comedy Corner in ATL. Have a couple of upcoming shows with dates to be determined. Working on some new music and a couple of features as well. A lot on the way
