Meet: Angel Murray
Me: How did you initially start getting into music & the industry?
Angel: I've definitely been into music my whole life, as a kid I would always love to perform and sing for my family but that was more of a playful thing. Although, in my younger years I was very into dance and was also part of my school choir which I really did enjoy! Music for me has remained a way to kind of escape the realities of what's going on sometimes, and other times it's a way for me to enhance my mood at that time.
For example, if I'm feeling happy I'll put on a playlist with my favourite upbeat songs to just help me be in that moment. As for the music industry, I've gotten into it fairly recently, I don't even know if I'd say that I've broken into it yet but if not then I'm definitely knocking on the door of it! I'm super excited for all of the opportunities that come with having released my debut single.
That’s quite the journey! How would you describe your style of music over the years?
The style of my music I would say is a mix of upbeat pop and sometimes more mellow, with my debut single it kind of varies in between tracks; I'd say that "Somewhere Else" can easily be mistaken for more of an R&B vibe whereas "Angels" is more uptempo Pop music. My sound since releasing those songs has gotten better in the sense that I've learned more about recording my vocals, singing better and also things like vocal layering. I improve with every song I record honestly, I feel like improvement in terms of music never really stops...there's always something that could be better and that just takes time.
Do you remember the first song you made when you started?
The first song I made fully was actually the first song I released, "Somewhere Else" which is Track 1 on my debut single. Comparing it with the next single I'm releasing, there is much more depth to it and I definitely challenged my voice a lot more.
Who are some of your favorite artists & producers to work with?
I actually haven't fully worked with any other artists, but I am in talks with a few which is super exciting! I've also stuck with my one producer Dan Messersmith throughout my journey thus far, and I absolutely love going through the mixing & mastering stages with him; he is the loveliest person and breaks down anything that I don't understand which is a major thing for me as I'm new to the music scene.
That’s fascinating! With that in mind, are there any artists you would like to work with in the future?
I would absolutely love to work with some smaller artists like Alessi Rose and Eileen Alister! But also people like Olivia Dean who I've looked looked up to whilst starting my journey in music. There are so many artists that I would be delighted to work with honestly, we would be here forever if I were to list them but an absolute dream collaboration would be Billie Eilish.
Outside of music collaborators, I’m sure your friends & family play a big role in your career so far.
My friends & family all do support my music journey, my immediate family especially! Huge shoutout to them actually, especially my parents, they have supported me even down to funding which has been a big part of me being able to get this far already. Whenever something even slightly big happens, my mum is always someone who wants all of the tea hahah, I keep her updated with absolutely everything and she is always super excited for me which makes my heart so full.
What made you go with your stage name Angel Murray?
My stage name is just my given name, Angel Murray! I felt like it was the best to build up on my actual identity instead of creating another name for myself, and I also probably wouldn't be able to think of a good one.
Wonderful! What are some other talents & hobbies outside of music that some may not know about you?
I don't think many people who are fans of me actually know that I'm still at university, studying law which is a super intense course so it'll be tricky juggling that but I'm determined to do it! Another thing could be that I actually am very athletic, I play pretty much all sports but if I had to choose a favourite it'd probably be football... but when I was younger I'd participate in literally anything like for example I have a 1st place medal for a cycling competition. So random hahaha.
Wow, that’s impressive! As far as music, do you have any future plans for your career? Additionally, who is an artist/producer you dream of collaborating with?
My future plans are to just keep on releasing music that firstly, I love... and that my supporters love! I'm planning to get started on a big project pretty soon too, but that's all I'll say for that. I'll kill two birds with one stone and say my dream artists & producers to work with would be Billie Eilish & Finneas hahaha, I just can imagine how fun the process would be in a studio with them and I think that's something so important when making music - being able to enjoy the process of it, although sometimes it's hard I definitely think that that duo would be fantastic to work with.
What does a world without music look like in your imagination?
Dull, dull as hell... I literally can't imagine a world without music. It's such an important part of life for me, and many other people that I know.
As someone who’s in the beginning of a bright career, is there any advice you would give to someone who is thinking about getting into music?
I would say just do it! Start now, while you have all of these ideas, and please don't be deterred by how scary it might seem. You truly don't know what might happen, who might recognize you, and where your career could go. As long as you believe in yourself, you'll do well. Another thing I would say is important to touch on, is that you do not have to have gone to music school or have been a theatre kid...I feel like that's a thought I used to have in my mind but it's absolutely not true. In fact, if you haven't it's just that much more impressive that you've got the talent in you without having been trained up for it! Of course, I give the flowers to those who have been to music school and know the technicalities of music, I think it's super cool but it definitely isn't something that should deter you if you haven't gotten that experience. Take it from me hahaha, no musical background.
And finally, how would you describe your music in one word to someone who's never listened before?
I would describe my music as captivating if I had to use one word, reason being that I feel like it has this similar feeling to it whilst still being different.. so for new listeners, it's something that'll make them listen through pure intrigue of the style of my music. It definitely grows on people! The most common similarities I get are Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and recently Fiona Apple.
And any last words for the people? I hear you may have a surprise announcement!
My next single comes out on August 30th! This is my first time officially announcing it, so if you're reading this article, congrats on being the first to know.
